How Things Change, 2021, mixed media

When thinking of how things change, the seasons first come to mind. My whole body and mind is affected by the change of season, and I wanted to create a site specific installation that can take my mind to my favourite season: summer. Climate change also relates to this theme and is one of the reasons for my main chosen material: recycled magazine pages. Since paper comes from trees, creating trees out of used and consumed paper completes the cycle, while minimizing the waste I create. The vivid photography in magazines will give a lively and realistic colour palette to the brown bark and green leaves. The pages with text offers the illusion of texture and shade in the layering and curling of birch bark. The trees grow straight through the floor and ceiling, giving the illusion that the viewer is on top of the forest, perhaps viewing from a tree house. The purple “fairy lights” above give the illusion of stars at night.
